Panama Update - July 2008
Howard writes:
The rainy season has started, fortunately the rebuilt church on Achutupu now has its palm-thatched roof in place and everyone is happy. There is a concrete floor, much better than the dusty earth which it replaces. Pastor Antero has

We have had several volunteers from USA at the Vacamonte church. Interestingly, more women than men seem to be seeking volunteer opportunities. There is a great need for English language teaching. As you know, there are many expats settling down in Panama, many from USA and Canada as well as Europe. Some understanding of English is a great help to the Kuna people so that can get employment in housework or businesses.

Also, many Kuna speak little or no Spanish. We have applied for a grant from the Canadian Government to start a program of Spanish teaching for adults on the island of Achutupu. Unfortunately, in the Kuna culture education for women was considered unnecessary, even discouraged. The result is that there are many young women, now mothers, who are illiterate; therefore un-empowered in their society.

Please pray for these women and all the people in Kuna Yala. Their society is in transition, more and more exposed to the outside world and its malaise. It is in the path of the drug trade from Colombia; drug running and drug addiction is happening on the islands, along with prostitution, AIDS, family abuse and break-up. Temptations abound where poverty is deep. But it is not solely a matter of economics. It is so important that they know that Jesus is the only safe rock upon which they can stand. Romans 12:2 gives us the direction.

On June 13th, in collaboration with the Canadian Association in Panama, we took down over 300 lbs weight of clothing, shoes and scholastic supplies for the students in the primary school on Achutupu. Fortunately, the airlines generously waived their freight charge (45 cents/lb) for which we were very grateful. The presentations coincided with Father's Day celebrations. There were student songs, recitations and dancing. It was a heart-warming occasion. Such delightful children. Ambassador Jose Herran-Lima went with us. He has been appointed to the embassy in Mexico, we shall miss him and his wife Susan. They have been good friends and fine ambassadors for Canada.

The school director and staff have asked for our help in creating a classroom for English language teaching - that will be one of our targets for the coming year.

Mariella and I hold Trinity, Barrie in our prayers.

Blessings to all,
Howard Walker
